TOOLS FOR INQUIRY
Selecting a Content Module

Tools to Support Inquiry

In 'Tools to Support Inquiry' each INTEC participant chooses for in-depth study ONE of the eleven INTEC content modules. The first challenge is, naturally, "Which one do I choose?"

We have prepared a set of materials to aid the selection process. You may wish to download versions of the software or demo copies to review. Some INTEC modules are not software based. A separate thread in the discussion area addresses the review of NON-SOFTWARE options.

The goal of the project is production of an inquiry-based unit that fits the goals and expectations of your classroom and student population and challenges you to bring inquiry to content learning where there was none before. With this in mind ask yourself these questions:
  • Do I want a software only module? OR, do I want materials that will let us do inquiry in any classroom?
  • Do I want a module that targets one specific set of concepts? OR, do I want materials that are general tools usable throughout the year?
  • How do these materials fit with existing curricula? Are they supplements, replacements, or tools for complete reconstruction of the course?

What is it you want to do? Where do you want to be at the end of the "learn the tool section"?

With each tool, a Field Expert will provide online help with any glitches or questions. The Field Expert has used the material in a classroom setting. Each participant will become a "peer expert" for others at the school who might also be interested in the curriculum.

The table below gives some idea of the richness of the offerings in the INTEC content modules.

Material prepared by collaborating curriculum development projects represents a segment of full-year, half-year, or replacement units for extended investigation.
Certainly each of these modules contain far more than can be presented in the INTEC course. In 'Tools for Inquiry,' the focus is gaining familiarity with the materials or software. The next topic -- Content Support for Inquiry -- explores each module at more depth.
