A Tool for Inquiry - LOGAL Chemical Kinetics
Leader Notes

As discussion leader, what am I supposed to do?

Logal Explorer

The focus of the presentation should be simulation models. Your co-participants may know little or a great deal about chemical kinetics.

What are the features of simulation models?
How does the design support the representation of the chemical kinetic phenomena?

Before the meeting preview the video (An Introduction to Science Explorer), secure space, and prepare handouts.

At the meeting facilitate discussion using video and handouts.

Assign a participant to post a summary of the LSG to the Discussion Area.

how long will it take? One hour.

Before the Meeting
Preview the first nineteen minutes of the video.

*You may select just a portion for viewing based on the level of the installation process.

**This video can be used as a reference for investigating the Customizing Tools (final ten minutes of the video).

Secure space and a VCR set-up.

Prepare copies of pages 19-23 of the Chemical Kinetics manual.

At the Meeting
Video Start by showing the first nineteen minutes (or portions) of the LOGAL video. Review the specific tools found on the Chemical Kinetics simulation in the handout.
Discussion How can students explore with Chemical Kinetics?

How could the Chemical Kinetics simulation be used in the classroom?
Could this simulation software be used to supplement traditional instruction?
How does student interaction through manipulation of models support inquiry?

Post summary Have each participant write down what they learned and what questions they have now on an index card.

The person posting the summary note to the discussion should collect comments and combine into a summary post about the meeting.
