The focus of the presentation should be inquiry in algebra and the classroom environment that supports it.

Before the meeting preview the video, secure space, and prepare handouts.

At the meeting facilitate discussion using video and handouts.

Assign a participant to post a summary of the local study group to the discussion area.

Before the Meeting
Preview resources Preview the Pattern Block Train video.
Secure space and equipment You will need:
  • some pattern blocks,
  • a VCR and the Pattern Block Train video,
Prepare handouts A copy of the Finding Patterns In Concrete Materials document for yourself. It is a guide to the presentation.

Copies of the triangle train student worksheet from the Finding Patterns document for all attenders.


At the Meeting
Introduction Give a short overview of the Algebra with Manipulatives module and the text, Algebra: Themes, Tools, Concepts.
VideoBegin Pattern Block Train video.
Stop and discuss Do not view the video straight through. Stop for discussion after Ben's explanation. Stop after Reeve's work with squares.
Conduct discussion Central issues:
  • How does this classroom support an environment of inquiry?
  • What is the role of the teacher in this environment?
  • How would one assess understanding?
Post Summary Have each participant write down what they learned and what questions they have now on an index card. The person posting the summary note to the discussion should collect comments and combine into a summary post about the meeting.
