Where does this tool take me and my class? Do I want to go there?

How do I/we get 'deeper' in our discussion?

Exploring and learning EDM as a TOOL FOR INQUIRY is the centerpiece of this activity.

The overriding questions are: What did you learn from this tool? What did you learn about doing inquiry? Looking for the unexpected, even in the commonplace, is a fine place to start.

In the concrete let's consider elements of the ADVANCED QUESTIONS in the FISHING MODEL. You were asked to explore:

  • What was the fishing time that gave you the maximal sustainable yield? What did that term come to mean for you?
  • What did you predict when a non-edible species like GAR was added? How did the population structure change? How was yield affected? What did over-fishing do to the population structure? Can a species be eradicated?
  • EDM is intended as a support for policy making. What factors control output in your model? How might real policy be established to control these factors? For example, fish catch can be controlled in many ways. Which is more effective? Which is easiest to regulate?

Where is the "unexpected" in your exploration. Take advantage of the reflection time to think and respond with precision and insight. Where is inquiry available for the picking both ON and OFF the computer?

Remember to ATTACH any EDM models to the post. Use the .EDM extension so readers can point their browsers to EDM when it asks with which application it should open the file.
