TOPIC ZERO: Summary of Activities

"Building Confidence, Exploring Expectations and Sharing Achievements"

ACTIVITY ONE:

Goal: To build a common vocabulary of terms and concepts for discussions about communication and solving technical problems on the web. To experiment with the new Lotus Discussion List.

Rationale: You should be able to have the 'web savvy' to ask a question about communication on the web using the correct terms. You may not understand the answer, but gaining familiarity with the terms is a start.
  1. Go to the TOPIC Zero Materials page
  2. Click on the terms you are familiar with. Start with the known first. If you want more challenge, select more boldly. This assignment consists mostly of reading.
These pages also contain questions from a personal perspective, or additional information you may find useful. Explore these questions through local sources. Is there anything new you learned?
  3. Go to the discussion base for your group listed below. View by SUBJECT. Click EXPAND. Find the Topic Zero Activity 1. Do the three activities

You will need the USERNAME and a PASSWORD you received when you registered for INTEC to get into these areas.
Clicking on the links below or the purple discuss button at the top of the participant pages will bring you to the discussion area.

Cohort A: Claremont - Northcote Discussion Base
Cohort B: New Orleans Discussion Base
Cohort C: New York Discussion Base
Cohort D: Phoenix Discussion Base
Cohort E: Boston, Philadelphia/Edison Fareira HS, Seward, Troy Discussion Base
Cohort F: Franklin/Randolph Discussion Base
Cohort G: Needham/Lakewood Discussion Base
Cohort H: Philadelphia Discussion Base

What am I expected to do when I get there?

First, make a bookmark in your browser so you can go there easily later.

Second, do the activities listed. There are three activities listed in the Discussion section. You can read summaries here to familiarize yourself with their goals and content. Completing the activities will take about one to two hours. Fuller descriptions are found at the Lotus Discussion base:
  1. Posting some data so we can view and sort data about ourselves.
You will post your Kiersey Temperament Score, the test taken as part of the registration process. There is need to type, just cut and paste the results if you saved the file on disk. If you don't have information that handy, don't worry. Links are provided to the Kiersey site to recreate the file.
  2. Posting a note about your expectations for the course. We at the Consortium need to know about you. The moderator needs a window onto what you would like to get out of participation in the INTEC netseminar. Perhaps you may wish to discuss software or technology you have used. Brilliant successes? Spectacular failures? Just starting out?
  3. Posting a web resource you have found. Simply browse the web a bit. Find any resource you think is interesting. COPY and PASTE its URL into the Lotus discussion.
ACTIVITY TWO:

Goal: To acquaint participants with more features of the Lotus Discussion List. To learn basic HTML commands in order to make a link and embed images into text.

Activity Two is all on the Playground on our Lotus Notes server. Why the Playground? The playground is a place to experiment, make errors, and fix them. Clicking on the links below or the purple discuss button at the top of the participant pages will bring you to the Playground area.

Cohort A: Claremont - Northcote Playground Base
Cohort B: New Orleans Playground Base
Cohort C: New York Playground Base
Cohort D: Phoenix Playground Base
Cohort E: Boston, Philadelphia/Edison Fareira HS, Seward, Troy Playground Base
Cohort F: Franklin/Randolph Playground Base
Cohort G: Needham/Lakewood Playground Base
Cohort H: Philadelphia Playground Base

ACTIVITY THREE:

Goal: To learn about the new ATTACH feature of the Lotus Discussion List. To learn how to upload an image to a web server.

Activity Three is completely on the Playground. Go to your Playground space. There will be two activities: Topic Zero, Activity One; Topic Zero, Activity Two. Clicking on the links below or the purple discuss button at the top of the participant pages will bring you to the Playground area.

Cohort A: Claremont - Northcote Playground Base
Cohort B: New Orleans Playground Base
Cohort C: New York Playground Base
Cohort D: Phoenix Playground Base
Cohort E: Boston, Philadelphia/Edison Fareira HS, Seward, Troy Playground Base
Cohort F: Franklin/Randolph Playground Base
Cohort G: Needham/Lakewood Playground Base
Cohort H: Philadelphia Playground Base

Again, all of these activities are focussed on building skills with the Lotus Discussion list. You are encouraged to view, sort, postings in different ways, as well as responding to any you wish. The 'outline' structure of the Lotus Discussion does take some getting used to but you will find it a helpful tool. These web pages are quite unlike any you have visited before. You are building them.
If you are a slow typist, don't fret or type much, just cut and paste from other sources.

Enjoy playing with this new technology!
